Hydrocortisone for skin: a steroid medicine for treating eczema, psoriasis and insect bites

Not everyone experiences side effects when taking steroids but some people do. In the short-term, the side effects of steroids are usually mild and will go away soon after you finish the treatment course. What side effects could I get with steroids?

Some people with scalp psoriasis find it embarrassing when they first visit a new hairdresser or barber. It is always worth making general enquiries of friends and relatives about local hairdressers or contacting the Hairdressing Council for further advice. There are times when hydrocortisone creams can make certain conditions such as acne, worse. They can also cause other conditions such as rosacea and impetigo look and feel worse. How do you treat topical steroid withdrawal?

Over-the-counter hydrocortisone is the lowest-potency steroid cream available, but could cause thinning of the skin if used daily for many consecutive weeks. This is especially true if steroid cream is used on thin, sensitive skin such as the eyelids, genital areas, or the folds of the skin. As a general rule, to minimize the risk of side effects, use the lowest strength preparation that is effective.

Most people only need to use hydrocortisone skin treatments for a short time. Sometimes you only need to use the skin treatments for a few days. A steroid card lets healthcare professionals know you take steroid medicines and provides life-saving information in the event of an emergency. You’re most likely to be prescribed oral steroids if you have a flare-up of your symptoms or an asthma attack.
